At present the MNR effectively runs as a single track siding between
Wymondham and Dereham; understandably this is a substantial
operational constraint as only one train can be on the branch at any
one time. The loop at Thuxton is being constructed to allow two
trains to pass eachother at the mid-point (Thuxton) hence doubling
the capacity of the line from one train every 2 hours down to an
hourly service.
Some of the tasks that are being undertaken include:
Dropping over 1000 tonnes of new ballast and laying 20
track panels.
Commissioning of a signalbox with 7 mechanical signals, 2 colour
lights and 3 HW point machines to control the layout
Constructing a platform extension allowing for 5 coaches as opposed
to 2 on the up road
Widening of the level crossing to accomodate the double track
Removal of the existing crossing keepers cabin and providing
electricity and water to the new signalbox
All of this work is being undertaken by volunteers and
the project; costed at £50,000 is being funded entirely by public
donations.
